The way you speak can empower and anchor you in your identity, and that it is at the center of our gender-affirming speech and communication programs. Our goal is to help alleviate voice dysphoria, but more importantly, we want to help you define and live in a state of vocal gender euphoria. We believe that our job is to honor your expertise in your own experience and help you feel at home with your own voice.

The path of progress is rarely linear

Getting started

Your introductory lesson gives you and your teacher a chance to get to know each other, start doing some vocalizing and planning, and for you to decide if we are the right fit for you. We hope that you leave your intro lesson feeling seen, supported, and ready for vocal and personal growth.

The novelty phase

In your first month of weekly lessons, you might be riding high on all the new information and discoveries about your voice. This is the perfect time to start laying groundwork for a practice routine and lean into the delightful new process.

The speed bump

Somewhere around the 6 or 8 lesson mark, it's not uncommon to feel like you've hit a wall or that progress has stagnated. This is actually a great sign that you are progressing! During the transition from learning the basic skills to implementing them to solidifying new habits, the progress might be slow and steady, or it might come in spurts. Keep at it!

Consistency is key

For many of our students, there is meaningful progress around 3-4 months of consistent, weekly lessons. At this point, you're starting to reinforce what you've learned and integrate new skills into your daily life. This is the perfect time to connect with fellow Voice Lab students at an event like Trans Voice Tune Up and get some social practice time.

Our philosophy on passing

We recognize that in our current society, you as a trans/non-binary person carry the burden of comporting yourself in order to be treated with kindness and decency. It should not be yours to bear. We honor that moving fluidly in the world is a safety concern even in the smallest social interactions. We believe that our responsibility within voice work is threefold: to recognize and deconstruct gender stereotypes; to offer you tools to adapt in order to keep yourself safe; and to celebrate the beauty, complexity, and individuality of gender, especially as it relates to voice and communication.
