Sometimes our teachers have a waitlist, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to join the community. Check out recurring events like Open Mic Nights or Community Salons to come and meet us and make new Voice Lab friends.
Most students have private voice lessons every week at the same day and time. But we do more than lessons, too! New and current students are warmly invited to join any of our classes or events. Whether you’re joining us in Chicago or anywhere in the world, we’ve got something for you!
Along the journey of gender-affirming speech, you will likely find yourself looking for a place to practice new skills in a low-pressure social environment. Be sure to ask your teacher about monthly events like Trans Voice Tune-Up for ways to practice with pals.
Before your intro lesson:
Submit a new student inquiry form and tell us as much as you’re comfortable with about your voice and what you would like to get from your lessons.
Our administrative team will make a teacher recommendation and help facilitate a new appointment for an introductory lesson. In the intro lesson, you’ll get to know your teacher, start vocalizing, and make a plan for how you’d like to be supported.
After your intro lesson:
Your instructor will make a recommendation about lesson length and frequency. Most of our students have weekly recurring lessons.
The administrative team will confirm your lesson schedule and answer any questions about our studio policies.
All of our voice teachers are trained in gender-affirming voice work as part of the core values of The Voice Lab. Many of our teachers identify within trans/non-binary communities as well, and we love the chance to help support our siblings.
Just like with all of our lessons, the experience is tailored to you. Gender euphoria, safety, exploration, and affirmation look different for each person, and we want to offer the support that you need to serve your own voice aspirations.
Gender-affirming voice care can include:
Some clients take lessons for as few as 3 months, and some take lessons for 12 months or more. And sometimes, our speech clients end up loving the work so much that they decide to try singing!
To make sure you have the best results possible, you will need:
Of course! During your introductory lesson, you and your teacher will talk through your vocal aspirations and make a plan to support your voice journey with us—whether that’s speech, singing, or all of the above.
Before your first lesson, your instructor will send a welcome email and include a Zoom link which you will use for all subsequent lessons with that instructor. Your instructor’s Zoom link is also included in appointment reminder emails from WellnessLiving.

We no longer offer gift cards or pre-purchased gift lessons. One of our core values is agency, so it’s important to us that students are choosing to engage in voice lessons of their own volition for their own reasons. We can send a voucher to your loved one to let them know that you are here to support their voice journey, if they so choose. You can also visit our merch store if you’d like to gift your loved one a fancy, new The Voice Lab tote or travel tumbler!
The name and pronouns you provide in your “Profile Details” is the name we will use to address you and will appear on all of your appointment notifications, which you can update at any time. The only place where you may be required to enter a different name is under “Billing,” where you will need to provide the name associated with your credit card on file.
